SHORT VERSION:

Slice boxed Tofu into ~ 1 cm slice. On a plate, sprinkle some salt, place tofu on the plate, and then sprinkle some salt (1 pinch) then flour (1 pinch) on the Tofu.Place Tofu onto the pan. pan-fry for 2 min. Sprinkle some flour on the tofu (the side facing up), then flip the Tof, cook for another 2 min. Done! See G.E.M. below for tips on adding more flavors.

INTRO:

A good piece of Tofu has unique flavors that do not require much manipulation. I often just eat Tofu right out of the box without any additional flavoring. We can also add additional flavors and texture to Tofu with very simple and easy recipes. In this post, I am using an easy Chinese tofu recipe that uses a little bit of salt and flour to pan-fry the tofu. I also added couple optional steps for people who like to add more aroma and flavor to this dish. Enjoy!

TIP:

Tip.1

Add salt (1 pinch, distribute evenly) on tofu before pan-fry to extract excess moisture, and sprinkle flour to absorb some of the moisture that can turned into thin crust during pan-fry.

Tip.2

Use firm to etxra firm tofu for pan-fry or stir fry.

add scallion or thai basil at the end of cooking to add aroma and flavor

pour Soy sauce+water/rice wine (1T) just before turning the heat to give the tofu slight burnt soy sauce flavor. Add some sugar if you like a hint of sweetness.

  • Skillet/pot (~ 6 or smaller, 2 Qt or smaller)
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  •  Measuring spoons

Protein

  • Tofu – 1 box.

Vegetable:

  •  (optional G.E.M.) Scallion – 2 stalks.

Sauce/condiments/Spices:

Units: t = teaspoon, T = tablespoon.

*note* relative ratio is more important the absolute amount.

  • (Optional) Soy Sauce – 1T
  • (Optional) Rice wine (i.e. sake or cooking wine) – 1T

BEFORE COOKING:

Prep.1

Slice Tofu into ~ 1 cm to 1 inch thick slices, depending on your preference.

Prep.2

Sprinkle salt and flour on both side of the tofu. Sprinkle salt first. You can also sprinkle salt on the plate that will be holding the tofu.

In a pan, high heat, add oil (1t). Add Tofu into the pan. Grill for 2 min on each side

Add scallion, soy sauce (1T) and rice wine (1T) into the pan. Turn off heat when the sauce are almost dry (< 1 min). Be careful not to put too much salt if you decide to do this step, otherwise the tofu will become too salty.

Turn heat off and It’s ready to serve!
